Question: Invented in 1902, this once rarely-used appliance has made our lives both better and in some ways worse. Around 90% of the US population uses it. What is it?
Answer: The Air Conditioner!
The modern air conditioner was initially created to mitigate humidity in a publishing company’s print house to keep paper from swelling. Now the air conditioner keeps us cool on hot summer days. One problem with the air conditioner is how it has contributed to keeping people in their homes rather than on their porches or walking their neighborhoods.
Lots of things, big and small, get in the way of being familiar with our neighborhoods and our neighbors. Jesus calls us to be counter-cultural and engage with our neighborhoods with love and compassion. That’s the subject of today’s conversation, and we’re in for a treat. Our friend, Pastor Jared Mackey, is here to bring us a sermon from God’s heart to ours on this very topic. His sermon is called “Love Your Neighbor. Love Your Neighborhood.”
